AEGEE-León SU 2026: Spain’s Secret Wild North
Ancient Roman festivals, Atlantic coastal escapes, and rugged mountain peaks: AEGEE-León is organizing the Summer University “Lionborn: adventures and myths” from 24 July to 4 August 2026. 25 participants will dive into the underrated beauty of Northern Spain, exploring the hidden nature and rich gastronomy of the León region. The fee is 220 Euro, with a 40 Euro optional package with kayaking and a visit to a unique wolf conservation centre.

GT: What is the main idea behind your SU?
AEGEE-León: Our main idea is to help participants get to know the region of León. It is a very underrated area of Spain that has a lot to offer in terms of nature, history, and gastronomy. We believe a Summer University focused on those three topics is a great way to showcase our region.
What is included in the fee of 220 Euro?
The fee includes two meals a day, accommodation, and all daily activities, excluding the two optional ones. It also covers the cost of traveling between locations. The activities covered by the optional fee of 40 Euro are a kayaking trip along the Sella River and a visit to the “Centro del Lobo,” a museum and semi-natural park where you can see wolves in their natural habitat and learn about their importance to the wildlife of the region.
Which cities and landmarks will you visit?
We will visit many places in the province of León and its surroundings, such as:
- León: Featuring its impressive cathedral, Casa Botines by Gaudí, the highest number of bars per capita in the country, and unique gastronomy. It will be our main base for the first 10 days.
- Astorga: A Roman city with another impressive Gaudí monument. We will visit the Roman Fair, featuring markets, parades, and shows.
- Sanabria: Home to the wolf center and a beautiful lake in the province of Zamora – the perfect place to hike and soak in the sun.
- Burgos: A historical city near León where you can see the castle, the cathedral, and picturesque streets famous for traditional “pinchos.”
- La Vecilla: Known for its river beach; we’ll travel there by train to enjoy the best views of the countryside.
- Babia: Where you will experience breath-taking mountains and valleys. We’ll be camping here for a night under the stars!
- Muros de Nalón: A lovely coastal town in Asturias where you can experience the Atlantic coast. We’ll spend the night at a lovely little hostel by the coast.
- Arriondas: The starting point for the “Descenso del Sella” – with optional kayaking on the Sella River, passing through valleys of different mountains in the province of Asturias.
- Lagos de Covadonga: Two stunning lakes within the Picos de Europa National Park.

WIne-tasting is part of the programme.
There will be workshops too. What are they about?
Most will be interactive and dynamic! We will have workshops on the history of the cities we visit, as well as Spanish language sessions so participants leave with basic conversational skills and local sayings. We are collaborating with institutions to host sessions on sexual health and the importance of the European Union. Of course, no visit is complete without wine and cheese tastings, a workshop on regional gastronomy, and trying the famous Asturian cider. And, because we are exploring the nature and countryside of the region, we include a workshop on local flora and fauna.
How do you pack so much value into such a small fee?
We have partnered with lots of institutions and companies within León that have agreed to collaborate with us. We also count on the support of the University of León.
What special local tradition are you going to share?
We’ll show you real Spanish traditions from an insider’s perspective. Through our cuisine workshops, you’ll experience food and drink as if you were part of a real Spanish family on summer holiday. We are also offering the chance to experience a “Queimada,” a traditional mystical ritual from Northern Spain.
What is the single most epic activity of the SU?
The hikes through paradise-like locations make you feel like in paradise, and the Sella River descent is fun and pure excitement. However, the Astorga Roman Fair is truly unique—we’ll all dress up as Romans and participate in games and activities all day and night!

Discover a new place every day.
Imagine it’s the third SU day. Where am I, what am I eating, and what does the air smell like?
You are discovering the city of León, sharing tapas, visiting the cathedral and the local park. The air smells like summer, the river by the park, and a picnic — while you recover from the European Night the day before!
You start as 24+ strangers. How do you turn them into a family?
Living through adventures, partying, and sleeping in the same place naturally makes you more open. It’s like being a kid at summer camp again; you make best friends for life in just a few days.
AEGEE is famous for its Spirit. How would you describe it to a new member?
AEGEE is a big European family where it doesn’t really matter what your interests are, where you’re from, what you study… As long as you want to be part of the community, you’ll be received with open arms and you’ll feel that you belong to something big where you can find people who you can rely on.
Is there a specific drink guaranteed to become the vibe of the trip?
Local drinks like “sidra asturiana”, the Asturian cider, and “limonada”, a traditional local drink from León, distinct from regular lemonade, will definitely define the vibe!

Of course you will also see the seaside.
Who is your ideal participant?
Someone active who loves to discover nature, enjoys hiking, is social and wants to get to know more about the lesser-known parts of Spain. If you are ready to leave your comfort zone and try new things, this is for you. If you don’t like hiking or trying new foods, you might want to reconsider!
What makes your AEGEE local famous within the network?
We have been a very active local in the past, and are now recovering that motivation to organise events and experiences in León. We have also recently been active on the European level as well.
If you could send a 10-second voice note to someone hesitating to apply, what would you say?
If you are looking to have one of the craziest summers of your life, you should definitely apply to our SU, as this is a chance that you may only have once in a lifetime! Do not waste the opportunity to meet new people, create long lasting friendships, and fully immerse yourself into Spanish culture!
Check out the course description at the official SU application page. The application period ends on 1 May 2026.
