SU Team: The Summer University “Balkan Bridges: Connecting Cultures” offers an immersive exploration of the rich cultural tapestry and historical intersections within the Balkan region. This collaborative initiative between AEGEE-Bucureşti and AEGEE-Sofia seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the diverse heritage and shared traditions that have shaped these nations. Participants will engage in a comprehensive study of the Balkans as a dynamic nexus of civilizations, where East meets West and ancient legacies resonate with contemporary narratives.
GT: Why did you choose the topic?
SU Team: Our choice is driven by a passion for unveiling the hidden gems of the Balkans and celebrating what makes this region truly exceptional. Here’s why this theme resonates so strongly.
Cultural Tapestry: The Balkans are a melting pot of civilizations, where diverse cultures have intertwined over centuries. This theme allows us to unravel the threads of history and explore the vibrant tapestry of traditions, arts, and languages that define the Balkan identity.
Culinary Delights: Food is a universal language, and the Balkans boast a mouthwatering array of dishes that reflect their unique blend of influences – from Romanian sarmale to Bulgarian banitsa.
Spectacular Landscapes: The Balkans are blessed with natural landscapes of spectacular beauty, from majestic mountains to picturesque Black Sea coastlines. We intend to explore these landscapes and appreciate the profound connection between humans and nature in this fascinating region.
Bridging Communities: Central to our theme is the idea of building bridges between communities, between people, and between nations. We aim to facilitate dialogue and promote mutual understanding through our collaboration in the Summer University, thereby contributing to strengthening intercultural relationships and fostering sustainable friendships.

SU Team: The Summer University will offer immersive language workshops in Romanian and Bulgarian, providing participants with the opportunity to deepen their language skills and enhance cross-cultural communication. In addition to language learning, participants will engage in interactive workshops covering scouting, first aid, sustainability practices, and mental health yoga sessions. These workshops aim to equip attendees with valuable skills while promoting well-being and environmental consciousness.
GT: Which cities and landmarks will you visit?
SU Team: Our journey begins in Sofia, the vibrant capital of Bulgaria, where we’ll immerse ourselves in its history and modern charm. Continuing our adventure, we’ll travel to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, known for its picturesque Old Town and Roman ruins. Discover the unique blend of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, and Bulgarian heritage while enjoying the lively atmosphere of this captivating city. Next, we’ll journey to Bucharest, Romania’s dynamic capital, where grand architecture meets bohemian vibes. Explore the impressive Palace of the Parliament, stroll through the beautiful Cismigiu Gardens, and experience the city’s legendary nightlife with fellow participants. Finally, our expedition concludes in Constanta, a historic port city on the Black Sea coast. Explore the ancient ruins of Tomis, founded as a Greek colony, and relax on the stunning beaches of the Black Sea. Enjoy leisure activities, beachside relaxation, and memorable social gatherings to wrap up our unforgettable Summer University experience.

In Sofia, get ready for immersive city tours and captivating excursions into the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, in Plovdiv, prepare to delve into the Unesco World Heritage sites and uncover centuries of history and culture. As we journey to Bucharest, you’ll have the chance to explore the city’s lively nightlife and take a stroll down the fascinating Calea Victoriei boulevard. When we reach Constanta, unwind with beach relaxation, sandcastle building, and lively beach parties. But wait, there’s more! Join us for engaging workshops on traditional Romanian and Bulgarian dancing, scouting, first aid, and language lessons in Romanian and Bulgarian. Explore the cities’ intriguing history on guided tours, including ancient Greek fortresses in Constanta and the unique architecture of Bucharest. Don’t miss out on visits to iconic attractions like the majestic Palace of Parliament and the fascinating Village Museum.

SU Team: The Balkan Bridges Summer University is brought to you by two of the most bubbly AEGEE Antennae dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and youth empowerment: AEGEE-București is one of the liveliest and most dynamic locals in Southeast Europe. Our local has a reputation for organizing exciting and meaningful projects that focus on multiculturalism, diversity, and human rights, such as our successful Spring Agora in 2019, dynamic Summer University Projects and New Year’s Events. But we don’t just care about our projects – we also care about our members. That’s why we’re dedicated to creating a supportive and welcoming environment that prioritizes mental health and strong relationships between our team members. AEGEE-Sofia was established in 1991 and is the only Bulgarian antenna in the AEGEE-Europe network. The organization is active on a local and European level, having organized numerous events in recent years, including a Network Meeting, a Training New Trainers event, and a Europe on Track stop.
