AEGEE-Bakı SU 2026: Discover the Land of Fire
Ancient temples, Caspian Sea sunsets and mountain adventures: AEGEE-Bakı is organising the Summer University “Beat The Heat Vol. V” from 1 to 14 August 2026. 30 participants will explore Azerbaijan and its amazing culture. The fee is 250 Euro, with an optional 50 Euro package unlocking special activities such as horse riding, a boat trip and visits to famous cultural landmarks.
GT: What is the main idea behind your SU?
AEGEE-Bakı: The main idea of “Beat The Heat Vol. V” is to experience the Caucasus not as a tourist, but as a local. Azerbaijan is a place where ancient traditions, modern architecture, mountains, and multicultural history meet in a unique way.

Amazing views were plenty at the Summer University.
Why does the SU represent the best of your region?
Our participants will experience everything that defines Azerbaijan: warm hospitality, traditional cuisine, music, historical landmarks, and breathtaking nature. In just two weeks, they will see how diverse our culture is—from centuries-old fire temples to modern architectural icons and from mountain villages to vibrant city life.
What is included in the participation fee?
The participation fee of 250 Euro covers accommodation in hostels and dormitories, internal transportation during trips, workshops, cultural activities, hikes, parties, and most of the programme organized by our team.
What extra experiences does the optional fee of 50 Euro unlock?
It unlocks some special activities such as a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Center, a boat tour on the Caspian Sea, horse riding, wine-tasting, and visits to unique places like the Surakhani Ship Museum, the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, and the ancient fire temple Ateshgah of Baku. These experiences give participants a deeper look into our history, architecture, and traditions.
Which cities and landmarks will you visit, and which one is a hidden gem that tourists often miss?
Our journey starts in Baku, where participants will explore the famous Old City Icherisheher. We will also travel to Shamakhi, home to the Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory, and explore the nature of Dagustu National Park and the green landscapes around Ismayilli. One hidden gem many tourists miss is Yanardag, the “Burning Mountain”, where natural flames have been burning from the earth for centuries – a magical place that truly represents Azerbaijan’s nickname, the Land of Fire.

During a Dolma workshop the participants prepared a traditional meal at the SU in 2025.
There will be workshops too. What are they about?
Workshops are an important part of the SU because they allow participants to actively engage with our culture. Participants will join several interactive sessions:
- Multiculturalism and Tolerance Workshop: This workshop introduces Azerbaijan’s multicultural society, where different religions and ethnic groups have coexisted peacefully for centuries. Participants will discuss cultural differences and share perspectives from their own countries.
- Azerbaijani Language Workshop: Participants will learn basic Azerbaijani phrases and try writing the alphabet in a creative calligraphy session. It’s both educational and fun, and everyone leaves knowing at least a few words.
- National Dance and Music Workshop: Participants will learn traditional Azerbaijani dances and rhythms. By the end, everyone will be able to perform a small dance together.
- Cooking with Local Women Workshop: Participants will cook traditional dishes together with local women, learning recipes and the cultural meaning behind Azerbaijani cuisine.
- Wine-tasting Workshop: Participants will discover Azerbaijan’s growing wine culture and learn about traditional winemaking techniques.
“Beat The Heat Vol. V” indicates tradition. Is the programme always the same?
Not at all! The name reflects the tradition of continuing the event, but every edition is different. Each year we improve the programme by adding new locations, workshops, and surprises. We listen to feedback from previous participants and make the experience even more exciting. While the spirit remains the same, the adventure is always new.

Wine-tasting during the SU in 2025
What special local tradition are you going to let your participants in on?
One of the most special traditions participants will experience is Azerbaijani tea culture. Tea is more than just a drink, it’s a social ritual. It’s served in traditional pear-shaped glasses with sweets and jams, and it usually comes with long conversations and laughter. Another tradition we will introduce is Azerbaijan’s wine culture. Many people are surprised to learn that Azerbaijan has ancient winemaking traditions dating back thousands of years. During the trip, participants will take part in a wine-tasting experience where they will discover local flavours and learn about how wine has been part of our culture for centuries.
What is the single most epic activity where participants will feel like they’re in a legendary story?
One of the most epic moments will definitely be exploring Icherisheher, the historic Old City of Baku. Walking through its narrow stone streets, surrounded by ancient walls and centuries-old architecture, feels like stepping into another era. The small winding alleys, hidden courtyards, and historic atmosphere make participants feel as if they are part of a legendary story from the Silk Road.
Imagine it’s the third SU day. Where am I, what am I eating, and what does the air smell like?
It’s the third day and you’re on a boat in the Caspian Sea, slowly sailing along the coast of Baku. You’re enjoying delicious local snacks while looking at the skyline and feeling the warm summer breeze. The air smells like salty sea air mixed with fresh food and summer heat. Around you, people are laughing, taking photos, and realizing that this experience is something they will remember for years.
You start as 30+ strangers. How do you plan to turn them into a family in just a few days?
We focus on creating shared experiences from the very beginning. Ice-breakers, team games, cultural nights, workshops, hikes, and parties bring people together naturally. When people cook together, travel together, sing karaoke together, and get lost in a new city together — friendships happen very quickly.
AEGEE is famous for its Spirit. How would you describe it to a new member?
The AEGEE Spirit is about openness, friendship, and curiosity. It’s about meeting people from different countries and realizing that despite our differences, we share the same excitement about discovering the world.

There will also be many outdoor activities during the Summer University.
Who is your ideal participant, and who should probably not apply?
Our ideal participant is curious, open-minded, and excited to explore new cultures. Someone who enjoys meeting new people, trying new foods, and stepping outside their comfort zone. This SU might not be ideal for someone who prefers luxury tourism or a very relaxed schedule, because our programme is quite active and full of adventures.
What makes your AEGEE local famous within the network?
AEGEE-Bakı is known for its hospitality and energetic events. People often say that once you visit Bakı through AEGEE, you feel like you’ve gained a second home. Our events are famous for combining culture, adventure, and unforgettable parties.
If you could send a 10-second voice note to someone hesitating to apply, what would you say?
Hey! If you’re thinking about applying to “Beat The Heat Vol. V” — just do it. Two weeks, amazing people, mountains, culture, parties, and memories you’ll talk about for years. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!
