Check Out AEGEE's SU History

The Summer Universities are the most continuous projects of AEGEE-Europe. They started in 1988 with ten language and cultural courses organised by local AEGEE antennae. From the beginning, the aim was to enable young people to experience Europe directly through travel and cultural exchange – organised by students, for students.

Over the years, the project expanded both geographically and conceptually. Especially after the end of the Cold War, Summer Universities played an important role in connecting Western and Eastern Europe. The original language courses gradually developed into different formats, including thematically focused courses on culture, politics or the environment.

Despite changes in size, structure and technology, the core idea has remained the same since 1988: offering accessible, non-formal learning experiences and fostering intercultural understanding across Europe. Summer Universities are organised every year and form a central part of AEGEE’s history and identity.

This section provides a chronological overview of past AEGEE SUs. Each year includes an overview of the courses, as well as images where available. The archive illustrates how the SU project has evolved over time. It will be expanded gradually as more material becomes available.
